After watching our new firm but fair parking wardens strutting their stuff in Halifax last Sunday I am inclined to wonder how all this lovely lolly they must be getting in parking fines to supposedly improve parking is going to be spent. Certainly there seems to be no limit to their capacity to fine all and sundry – including their co-workers, for I am reliably informed that council service vehicles (formerly exempt under police regulation) are now being ticketed by these yellow coated yakuza and a high level wrangle is going on in the council about who is supposed to pay up! At the moment its falling on individual council drivers, which could potentially get public sector unions involved with heaven knows what effect on council services. Only the council could ticket its own workers! You couldnt make this up! So how are they going to improve parking? Lots of nice free secure car parks for shoppers perhaps, to attract people into our town centres? I suspect not. More likely will be speed cameras on every road in Calderdale and pay-and-display daleks charging you to park outside your front door in Blackshaw Head! Who needs terrorists?
