JANNOCK!

Songs, Dances and Romances of the Striding Dales

7. The Skipton Tup (Beresford)

As I was goin' to Skipton, all on a market day,
I spied the finest baa ram that ever was fed on hay...

AND ITS CLEAR THE ROAD THIS MORNING,
CLEAR THE ROAD AYE- O!
CLEAR THE ROAD YE FOGGY GUYS
AND BLOW BOYS BLOW...............

This ram he had four feet sir, four feet upon which to stand,
And every one of his four feet, it covered an acre of land.

The wool upon its back sir, reached up to the sky,
I swear the eagles built their nests, you could hear their young 'uns cry.

The horns upon its head sir, reached up to the moon,
Little boy went up in January and he didn't come back till June

The man that killed this ram sir, was up to his neck in blood,
Little boy that held the pail sir, was washed away in the flood...

Took all the men of Bucden to carry away his bones,
Took all the women from Starbotton, to roll away his stones...

JACK BERESFORD

Jackie Beresfords take on the Derby Ram – the chorus of the song reminds us that Jack once used to drive the Upper Wharfedale Snow Plough for the North Yorkshire County Council!
