Cuckoo

When the clubroom fills at half past eight,

And the children climb on the rusty gate,

She takes the rollers from her hair,

And finds exotic gowns to wear...

The slippers that she wore all day,

The egg stained pinny - slung away!

A cigarette in a brownstained hand,

Is stubbed on the floor as the evening's planned...

She zips on her favourite sequinned gown

With the low cut neck that the men peer down,

She paints her face and she paints her nails,

And off to the club in state she sails...

Her children scrawl on the neighbours fence

They're chucking grass sods at passing cars!

The kid in the rags with the snotty nose

Waits outside the local bars.........

WHERE THE DOVE ONCE SANG IN THE MEADOW

THE CUCKOO SHE SINGS IN THE TREE

AND I'M SEARCHING ALONE FOR A MAGIC STONE

TO GUIDE ME TO THE OPEN SEA.....

The man in the drapes and the black string tie

With the off-white shoes comes swaggering by,

He's off to the pub with his painted wife

While the children play with match and knife.

He looks at the watch in his silken vest,

Time to meet his mates in the Cuckoos Nest,

Spawned in the beer and the bingo card

A broken doll lies in his yard.....

In the plastic bar on the plastic chair

Sits the girl in the plastic underwear

In the final jive she'll hand to you

The briefs she took off in the loo!

And stagger home as best she can

For a plastic lay with a plastic man,

And in the morn her head will sing-

"whatever became of that wedding ring?"

The streets are wet and the mornings dark

As the sales rep chats with the junior clerk

Of the car and the concrete drive he laid

And how much mortgage is still unpaid;

He takes his lunch and he chats again

Of the beach and the disco out in Spain,

Backgammon and the neighbours dog

As the shopfronts glow in the morning fog....

Past the trellis fence and the driveway gate

His wife strips off for a plumbers mate;

A 'bit of rough', she makes one rule,

Before the kids get home from school...

At Half past six the tea is laid

The separate beds are neatly made,

They stroll to church with the tolling bell

Dressed to kill- for class must tell..

At eight o' clock the clubroom fills,

The plastic girl takes plastic pills;

The man in the drapes begins to jive,

The office closed at half past five....
