Notes - Western Fells I

"Where the mountains soar"…. Ennerdale, Cumbria, was once prime Herdwick country, but the Liza valley is now cloaked in dismal government pine forest. The valley, is, nevertheless, stunningly beautiful, (assuming one is out of the trees!)

"The Vampire Dog" … The 'girt dog'of Ennerdale - a famous and legendary 19th century sheep killer, that outwitted the locals for many years before it was eventually tracked down. It had a preference for drinking the blood of its victims, hence the name…..

"...Still you wait by a spectral door" 'The ghost' is an amalgam of three different tales from Ennerdale, Wasdale and Buttermere. The setting is the now demolished Ennerdale Hall Youth Hostel, which was replaced by the present one at Gillerthwaite long ago. Twas there the ghost walked!
