Notes - The Vale of Eden
"Silent springs and dried up wells..."  The Westmorland Limestone Plateau between Shap 
and Kirkby Stephen is an area rich in prehistoric remains - circles, cairns 'giants graves' 
and village settlements. Especially in the vicinity of Smardale Bridge.  
"The Flashing pool..." Sunbiggin Tarn, Westmorland. A Boggy bird sanctuary.  
"Water in the Rock..." It is curious that sheep appear to be able to follow the lines 
of underground water. When I made my journey however, they didn't appear to be having 
much luck! All the streams and springs were dry, and I walked about fifteen miles under 
a hot sun before I found sustenance in a pipe supplied cattle trough! There was more 
water beneath the ballcock than the 'rock', but that's poetic licence for you!
