Notes - The Vale of Eden
"Silent springs and dried up wells..." The Westmorland Limestone Plateau between Shap
and Kirkby Stephen is an area rich in prehistoric remains - circles, cairns 'giants graves'
and village settlements. Especially in the vicinity of Smardale Bridge.
"The Flashing pool..." Sunbiggin Tarn, Westmorland. A Boggy bird sanctuary.
"Water in the Rock..." It is curious that sheep appear to be able to follow the lines
of underground water. When I made my journey however, they didn't appear to be having
much luck! All the streams and springs were dry, and I walked about fifteen miles under
a hot sun before I found sustenance in a pipe supplied cattle trough! There was more
water beneath the ballcock than the 'rock', but that's poetic licence for you!
